What is Art?

Art is difficult to define. It depends on the context in which the term is being used. It depends on the intent of the artist. It depends on the opinions of the observers. I see art as the result of arranging elements in a way that affects the senses and emotions. Art is a medium for self-expression that lends interpretation, consciously or unconsiously, through the transfer of feelings from the artist to the observer. I feel that art is made with the intention of stimulating thoughts and emotions of which intends to reflect a message, mood, or symbolism that the artist has portrayed. The use of the term art does not always imply beauty or skill. What is artistic to one person may not be so to another.

What is Composition?

Although "art" and "composition" are terms often used interchangeably, I feel that "art" is the the result of the techniques of "composition". Through composition comes art. A piece must speak to the observer and it must continue to speak through the entire encounter. In rare cases, a well composed piece of art will continue to articulate feelings beyond the initial visual experience. This is done by way of several techniques of composition. A successful artistic composition draws the observer in, pulls their eye across the whole painting so that everything is taken in, and finally settles on the main focal point of the painting.
